What is SS-31 and where did it come from?

SS-31 is a synthetic tetrapeptide developed from a family of cell-permeable, mitochondria-targeting peptides. It is also referred to as elamipretide, MTP-131 or bendavia in the literature. Researchers study it mainly for its affinity for cardiolipin.

What makes it mitochondria-targeted?

Its alternating aromatic and cationic residues let it cross membranes without a transporter and accumulate in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Uptake in cell studies does not depend on membrane potential.

A lipid found almost exclusively in the inner mitochondrial membrane. It helps organise the protein complexes of the electron-transport chain, which is why a compound that binds it is of interest in bioenergetics research.
