A naturally occurring nine-amino-acid peptide, sequence Trp-Ala-Gly-Gly-Asp-Ala-Ser-Gly-Glu, first isolated in the 1970s from the cerebral venous blood of rabbits during induced sleep.

That is genuinely unresolved. No receptor has been identified for DSIP despite nearly fifty years of research, which is one of the main reasons it remains a subject of study.

Why is it called delta sleep-inducing peptide?

It was named for the conditions of its isolation and the delta-wave EEG activity observed in the original animal work. The name reflects the research history rather than an established mechanism.
